COVID-19 - Help for Students

Canada Emergency Student Benefit (CESB)

Post-secondary students are feeling the impact of COVID-19. Our office has heard from many students who were planning to start a summer job in May and are now worried about being able to pay for rent and basic living expenses in the upcoming school year.

This comprehensive, $9-billion plan will provide post-secondary students, including those expecting to start school in the fall and recent graduates, with the financial support they need for this summer.

  • CESB will be available to secondary students who are not eligible for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB).
  • This benefit would provide $1,250 per month for eligible students or $1,750 per month for eligible students with dependents or disabilities.
  • The benefit would be available from May to August 2020.

While this benefit is not yet available, students can prepare for the application process by creating a “CRA My Account” or a “My Service Canada Account”. More information will follow in the coming weeks.

Canada Student Service Grant (CSSG)

The Canada Student Service Grant will help provide Canadian students with valuable work experience while they help their community during the pandemic.

  • For students who choose to do national service and serve their communities, the new Canada Student Service Grant will provide up to $5,000 for their education in the fall.

More information will follow in the coming weeks.
